Horizontal movements are described using left and right.

Vertical movements are described using up and down directions.

In all cases a unit of measurement must be used. Centimeters, millimeters, kilometers,... etc.

### Transformations

Transformations are moving of a geomatric figure (shape). There are three types: translation, reflection, and rotation.

A translation is a slide along a straight line.

A reflection is a mirror image. A mirror line is called a line of reflection.

A rotation is a turn about a fixed point called the centre of rotation.

### Doubling a number

To double a number you can multiply by 2

you can add the number to itself

or you can double each digit in the number and add them all up.

We round numbers to estimate or simplify.

Step 1: circle the digit in the place value you are asked to round to.

eg. round to the nearest ten in this case you would circle the 3 in the number 432.7

Step 3: if the underlined digit is 5 or higher the circled digit goes up 1

### Cartesian Plane or Coordinate Grid

A Cartesian Plane is formed when a vertical (up and down) number line meets a horizontal (sideways) number line.

X-axis is the horizontal number line on a coordinate grid.

Y-axis is the vertical number line on a coordinate grid.

Origin is the point where the x-axis and the y-axis meet or intersect.

Quadrants are the four regions on the coordinate grid. They are labled using Roman numerals starting in the top right (I) working counter clockwise top left (II) bottom left (III) bottom right (IV)

Coordinates are the values in an ordered pair. The x value is always listed before the y value.
